Vaio’s first phone is coming

Last year, Sony sold its Vaio PC business to a group of Japanese investors in order to focus on its far more lucrative smartphone business. In the that time, a new company was formed – The Vaio Corporation – and now it’s developed its very own smartphone bearing the Vaio name.

The Vaio Phone was announced today through Japanese MNVO B-mobile yesterday, and it’s a mid-range phone with rather pedestrian specifications and physical dimensions that The Verge has described as “staid”.

The 7.95mm thick Vaio phone has a 1.2GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, a five-inch 720p touchscreen and runs Android 5.0, so it’s nothing truly special. However, in spite of The Verge’s less-than-enthusiastic description of it, I think it looks quite slick, and very reminiscent of Sony’s old Vaio notebooks (which I rather liked back in the day).

The Verge says the phone, which is “priced to move” at $33 a month for calls and unlimited data ($420 to buy straight-up), probably won’t reach the US but GSM Arena says (via Techblog.br) that it’s going to make its way to Europe, meaning it may also end up in South Africa at some point.

That having been said, with far cheaper options like Microsoft’s Lumia 535 and the Vodafone Smart 4 Turbo already here, it would be up against some stiff competition.

It’s a little disappointing that the first effort from Vaio has warranted such a luke-warm reception, but perhaps they’ll improve with subsequent models, should they get that far.
