Vodacom S6 callers can use Voice Over LTE from tomorrow

Should you be one of the fortunate few who can afford a Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge smartphone, from tomorrow you’ll be able to make voice calls over LTE and use data instead of your minutes on your shiny new handset.

Earlier this afternoon Vodacom announced the new voice-calling technology, dubbed VoLTE, which it says enables “faster call set up times (the amount of time it takes between dialling a number and the phone ringing at the recipient’s end), better voice quality, and additional capabilities such as being able to continue browsing the web or using apps while simultaneously making a call.”

While VoLTE isn’t exactly new, Vodacom said its rollout has been hampered by “a lack of compatible devices”. As Samsung’s latest phones hit the market, and with other compatible flagship phones soon to follow, that has changed, allowing Vodacom to deploy the service from tomorrow.

Vodacom said in a press statement that the VoLTE service is available to contract customers with compatible handsets, and that there is no additional charge to use the service. An update will be required in order to make use of it, but this will apparently roll out tomorrow.
