Mobile-friendly websites to enjoy better search visibility from today

From today, Google searches conducted on smartphones will return more results that are “mobile-friendly”.

That’s because Google has updated its search algorithm to prioritise websites that have been specifically designed to look and work best on smartphones.

This will have no effect on results for Google searches run from desktop and laptop computers, however.

Google first started talking about this change back in November, and today is the day it has gone live. Perform a search on your phone right now, and note the grey “Mobile-friendly” text that appears below each result.

The web development community is apparently calling today “Mobilegeddon”, but the consequences are nowhere near as dire as that name suggests.

If you run a website and you haven’t gotten wind of the tweaks to the mobile search algorithm, you probably have a lot of questions for Google about how this change will affect you.

Fortunately, the people over at Searchengineland.com have put together a long list of answers to the most frequently-asked questions, including biggies like “If I make my site mobile friendly today, how long will it take Google to pick up on those changes?” and “Will it impact tablet searchers?”. Hint: Between “a few” and “72 hours”, and “No”.

Since a large number of people access the internet with their phones, this is a most welcome change indeed.
