Could Bethesda’s E3 presence mean Fallout 4 is coming?

Yes. Yes it could. This is very exciting stuff.

Bethesda Softworks is a game publisher with a lot of high-value titles in its portfolio, including the gargantuan franchises The Elder Scrolls, Doom (basically everything id Software did) and, of course, Fallout.

So when it was discovered the company will be showcasing an unnamed RPG for the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at its booth in the South Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Centre at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, the internet exploded with speculation as to whether or not that game would be Fallout 4.

Actually, chances are it could be anything. While Bethesda has a number of role-playing games in its stable that include Skyrim, it’s been longer since a Fallout game – the last one was 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim released in 2011 – making it more likely this new game is Fallout Number Four.

Me, I’m pulling quite hard for it to be Fallout 4. While I love Skyrim and have clocked up over 270 hours just wandering around its huge, open expanse and gawking at all of its gorgeousness, Fallout occupies a more special place in my heart thanks to its VATS body-part-targeting system and future-retro aesthetics.

And as this game is aimed at current-gen consoles and PCs and all of the graphics horsepower that gives the developers, it should look even better than New Vegas did, and offer an even grislier VATS system to play with.

What do you guys think? And which would you prefer, a new Fallout or a new Elder Scrolls game?

Heck, either way I think gamers win. We’ll find out more in June, when the expo is on from the 16th to the 18th.
