Do you know where your tap water comes from?

The time it takes to get water from a tap in your house is probably around a second, but do you know where exactly your water is originally sourced from? Now you can use Journey of Water to find out.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) South Africa, 8% of South Africa’s land provides 50% of our water. Journey of Water is an campaign by the WWF SA and Sanlam to raise awareness about water preservation and educate South Africans about where they get their water from.

The campaign was launched today in the Drakensberg mountain range in KwaZulu-Natal with Deputy minister of Water and Sanitation, Pam Tshwete officially presiding over the event.

“Water is life – there is nothing you can do without it, and there is no substitute for it,” Tshwete said.

On the Journey of Water website, you can look up your water source via the site’s geo-location tool. You can then learn more about the source, other areas it supplies and natural and human sources that are threatening it.

A group of South African celebrities are currently on a four-day journey from the Drakensberg to Pietermaritzburg as part of the campaign where they will visit some of South Africa’s water sources.
