Etoll online payments to be overhauled? Twitter says “We still won’t pay”

Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa is due to make public the final decision on the future of etolls in Gauteng this afternoon, in a media briefing from parliament that follows”extensive public consultation, deliberations within government and approval by cabinet” over the past months, the Office of the Presidency said.

A reduction in price is almost certain, and following the Gauteng premier’s report earlier this year Ramaphosa is also likely to suggest an overhaul of the current system for payments. Other proposals in the January report included taxing tyre sales and increasing the number of exemptions. No matter what government announces about the future of etolls in Gauteng, however, many residents say they won’t budge on their decision to not pay.

It has been widely speculated that Ramaphosa will announce a cut in current etoll fees to help stabilise the drop in revenue and etag registrations reported since the launch of the tolling system in 2013.

But this won’t be enough to convince residents who have taken to Twitter today to reiterate their stance on non-payment.
