New Need for Speed coming later this year

We guess that nobody could claim that they didn’t see this one coming, but Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed that a new Need for Speed game will be making its way onto consoles and PCs later this year.

The new release will apparently reboot the franchise, and will include a number of aspects that haven’t been featured before.

“Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we’re returning it to greatness in this reboot. Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We’re listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games.

Simply titled ‘Need for Speed’, the game will take place in a nocturnal open-world, and it seems like the franchise will be going back to its roots of car customisation. With Project Cars making a huge impression on the market, and Forza being the dominant racer on Xbox consoles, Need For Speed has to do something rather unique to keeps its players.

EA Community Manager Ben Walke explained that the developers have taken comments from the NFS community pages, and implemented some of the suggestions.

“We’ve been working really closely with Speedhunters, our very own community who have helped us deliver a Need for Speed that is grounded in authentic car culture by diving into the world of past, present, and emergent trends of the urban car scene.”

You can view the teaser trailer below, but more details will be released at this year’s E3 conference in June.
