Windows 10 will work with your Android, iOS phone out the box

Microsoft has just taken the wraps off a new feature in Windows 10 it’s calling “Phone Companion” on the official Windows Blog. It’s essentially an app that will let you connect your PC to your Android, Windows Phone and iOS phone and let them make use of some of Microsoft’s services.

Once connected, the office documents and notes you have on your Windows 10 PC will become available on your phone, and you’ll be able to do things like streaming music stored in your OneDrive to your phone, create and edit Office documents and OneNote notes wherever your phone happens to be.

All photos you take on your phone will automatically sync with OneDrive. Presumably, there will be some sort of option to ensure uploads only happen when you’re on WiFi.

Microsoft will also bring Cortana, its digital assistant, to iOS and Android in the form of a standalone app. Her functionality will be somewhat limited on those platforms, however. She can still do reminders, flight-tracking, access notes in her notebook but her deeper integration into Windows 10 with things like accessing settings and apps will be missing from your Android and iOS phones.

Microsoft’s new strategy of getting its services onto whatever hardware happens to be available is apparently continuing unabated.

Windows 10 is still due out “this summer”, so expect it anytime from June onwards.
