Deadline to enter startups in DEMO Africa extended

Want to get your startup featured at the prestigious DEMO Africa conference in Lagos, Nigeria this September? You’re in luck. The organiser, VC4Africa, has just extended the application deadline for new businesses to apply for the showcase. According to a blog post published today, the plan is to get more entrepreneurs involved through a series of “mini DEMO Africa” events in the run up to the main one.

Start-up entrepreneurs from all over Africa are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to be “connected to the global start-up ecosystem through DEMO Africa”. That ecosystem, critically, involves getting investors to the event where your firm will be profiled. Your startup needs to fall under the one or more of the following categories in order to be eligible:

  • Agriculture
  • Health
  • Education
  • Manufacturing
  • Retail
  • Media and Entertainment
  • Communication
  • Transport and Logistics
  • Energy
  • Finance and Banking
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Waste Management and Recycling

There are specific innovations that DEMO Africa is looking to attract and they should:

– Solve a commercial problem

– Make an impact or change the marketplace into which it is introduced or create a new market

– Have a business plan and a management team capable of delivering the product to market

– Make its public debut at the DEMO Africa conference

– Must be a registered company

Organisers do state however that “the ultimate qualification is the ability of the innovation to change or impact the marketplace into which it’s introduced or create a new market.” A list of the innovations that are excluded is included on the web page where you can submit your application.

Although mini DEMO Africa events will be hosted in cities like Nairobi the main event will take place in Lagos on September 24th and 25th. Attendees will include Cairo Angels, Lagos Angels Network, Ivoire Business Angels, Viktoria Angels, Ghana Angel Investors Network, Africa Angels Network, Cameroon Angels, Silicon Cape and VC4Africa Investor Network. You may also register to attend the main event.
