Twitter’s Periscope now available for Android users too

Until today, iOS users were the only ones who could broadcast a live feed of whatever they wanted through Twitter’s Periscope application. But fret not, Android people, as you can now do the same.

“When we started Periscope, we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation — by providing users with the best way to start or watch a live video broadcast. As a small startup, our initial launch was limited to just iOS, but we’ve been working really hard to craft an experience that feels special on Android, yet still unmistakably Periscope,” the company said in a media statement.

Periscope is available to Android users who are running 4.4 (KitKat) and above, and it can be downloaded from Google’s Play Store.

The core features of the Android version remain the same as those of its iOS cousin, but there are a few things unique to the Google edition too:

  • A Material-inspired design
  • Granular control over additional Push Notification settings
  • A “Resume notification” so you can keep watching where you left off in case your broadcast gets interrupted.
  • Replays are saved without requiring the broadcaster to upload a file.

Recently, the company announced that new users will now be able to sign up for a Periscope account by using their mobile phone number instead of having to go through Twitter’s verification process.
