Ubisoft E3 Keynote: Everything you need to know

With competitors Bethesda and EA barreling out of the gate very convincingly ahead of this year’s E3, the pressure was on Ubisoft to serve up something special. In past years, the French publisher has unveiled the likes of Watch Dogs, The Crew and Tom Clancy’s: The Division alongside new entries in its established franchises. While punters knew mostly what to suspect, they were also hoping for one or two surprises. Ubisoft didn’t disappoint. If you want to watch the briefing in its entirety, it’s over on Ubisoft’s official YouTube channel. If you want a brief run down of the keynote’s highlights, read on:

South Park is getting a sequel

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are self-confessed whiny babies. Just before South Park: The Stick Of Truth shipped last year, the pair of them swore blind they’d never make another videogame as long as they lived. With that in mind, the game that opened Ubisoft’s E3 Keynote came as something of a surprise.

Right now, we don’t know if the announced South Park: The Fractured, But Whole is going to have the same turn-based RPG gameplay template as its predecessor, but we do know sword and sorcery is going to be traded out for superheroes, players will take on the role of ‘the new kid’ and it has a very very silly title.

Samurais will be fighting Knights will be fighting Vikings in For Honor (and presumably for honour)

For Honor is a brand new IP from Ubisoft that pits two teams of four players against one another in melee combat. In an industry where every second multiplayer game seems based around shooting other players, For Honor seems to be something of a more nuanced affair.

Well, if the demo at E3 was anything to go by, at any rate. While the players in the demo were able to cut swathes through armies of bots quite easily, they had to use a little more skill against human opponents. Wading in without parrying or defending looks like it’d get you chopped into Sashimi. We have to say that we want to know more, but right now, match types, customisation options and single vs campaign options are off the table.

Tom Clancy’s: The Division needs to hurry up and get released

While Tom Clancy’s: The Division is easily one of the most hotly anticipated titles on the new gen platforms, players are starting to get a little impatient with it. The reason for this is that it’s been been kicking around for around the expo circuit for about three years  now, made appearances at numerous keynotes and yet, neither players nor the media have had a turn at its controls.

It was always going to be one of the big noises at Ubisoft’s E3 keynote – that was a given. But seeing it played for the umpteenth time (and hearing the developers natter over the top of the gameplay) failed to really ignite the crowd in attendance. It’s good to hear that there’s a Beta coming out at the end of this year and that the game finally has a release date, but we’re kind of done being repeatedly shown this game. Now we want to play it. The Beta can’t come soon enough.

Ghost Recon is now an open world game

To close its E3 keynote, Ubisoft went big with a reveal of a brand new Ghost Recon. Instead of players sticking to shadows and stealthily taking out targets, however, Ghost Recon’s new gameplay offers players a smorgasbord of approaches; they can use stealth if they want to, but they aren’t necessarily penalised by attacking a target full frontal.

This may rub some of the faithful up the wrong way. Indeed, when the Ghost Recon: Wildlands trailer’s intro began, many of the punters in attendance were wondering if this was a reboot of the ill-fated Call Of Juarez series. It looks interesting though – if nail-shreddingly violent – and we’re looking forward to hearing more details about it. Watch this space…
