Bungie says sorry for PR gaffe, makes Taken King changes

Destiny’s upcoming expansion The Taken King is almost upon us, and in the run-up to the game’s release Bungie has made a fairly large PR mistake.

The Taken King’s creative director, Luke Smith, has apologised for being an “asshat” during an interview with Eurogamer in which he made misguided remarks about the cost of the game’s Collector’s Edition and its exclusive content.

The exclusive content, in this case, is three new in-game emotes and some armour shading to set Guardians apart, which naturally many Destiny players find attractive and would like to own without paying for content they have already bought.

In the interview, Smith defended the $80 price tag, but in such a way as to make gamers feel like their concerns were unimportant to the company.

Gamers were naturally unhappy with his response, leading to an update on the official Bungie blog in which apologised for his words.

“Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love – that random developer looks like an Asshat. But that Asshat was me – and those words rightfully anger you. I’m sorry,” Smith wrote.

In the wake of the furore, Bungie has decided to make those exclusives available as a separate $20 purchase so that all Destiny players can grab it if they want, without re-buying the game.

The option to pre-order it is not yet live on the Bungie site, but they ask for patience as “We’re working on it”.

Bungie has also re-iterated its commitment to the Destiny player base, saying “Thanks for caring enough to sound off. We heard the feedback, loud and clear. We’ll talk more soon.”

The Taken King and these new emotes and armour shaders will arrive later this year, on the 15th of September.
