You can now use Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account

With Facebook user base now numbering over a billion, it is hard to imagine someone who doesn’t use the social media website. But if you’re one of the two or three people left in existence who don’t have a Facebook account (gasp), you can now send messages to Facebook users – and vice versa – without joining the site.

“With Messenger, we’ve been focused on creating the best messaging experience possible by giving people a fun and easy way to connect and express themselves with friends and contacts. If you’re in Canada, the United States, Peru or Venezuela, we are starting to roll out a new way for you to sign up for Messenger – without a Facebook account,” said Louis Boval, a Facebook software engineer.

Facebook explained that people can use the Facebook Messenger app and still share photos, videos, group chats, and make voice and video calls – all that they need is a phone number.

Facebook explains how it works:

  • On the Messenger welcome screen, you will now see an option that says “Not on Facebook?”
  • From there, you can sign up with your name, phone number and a photo.

“For those who have Facebook accounts, there are many benefits to using your Facebook credentials when signing up for Messenger. People can easily message with their Facebook friends and contacts, access their Facebook messages and take advantage of multi-device messaging across mobile devices, the web and tablets.”

Earlier this month Facebook revealed that its instant messaging service has just hit 700 million users worldwide.

Back in November 2014, Facebook Messenger reached 500 million active monthly users and by March, was up to 600 million. If the service can maintain this steady growth rate at 100 million users every three months, it’ll hit one billion by around February next year.
