Buy your own jetpack for R1.8mil in 2016

The Martin Aircraft Company will soon make many geeky fantasies of flying with a jetpack come true. For folks with $150 000 (around R1.8 million) to spare that is.

Word is, the company will commercially release the Martin Jetpack in late 2016, a year earlier than originally projected by its inventor.

The rather hefty-looking piece of machinery, which was listed among TIME’s Top 50 Inventions in 2010, can be used (manned or unmanned) for military, commercial and recreational purposes.

It can carry any load up to 120kgs, fly up to just over 30 minutes at a speed of 74km per hour.

“The Martin Jetpack is a disruptive technology, much like the helicopter was when first developed, with substantial capabilities and is able to be flown by a pilot or via remote control,”the company says on its website.

“The Jetpack can take off and land vertically (VTOL) and because of its small dimensions, it can operate in confined spaces such as close to or between buildings, near trees or in confined areas that other VTOL aircraft such as helicopters cannot access.”

The company has also developed an augmented reality app that lets you explore the Martin Jetpack and its specifications right from your mobile.

If you’re really serious about getting yourself a Martin Jetpoack, you can pre-order it for $5 000.
