SA aerospace lawyer named among world’s top young space leaders

South African aerospace lawyer, Advocate Lulu Makapela, has been selected to be among six space professionals to receive the International Astronautical Federation’s (IAF) 2015 Young Space Leaders award.

The Young Space Leaders Awards recognises students or young professionals between the ages of 21 and 35 years who positively contribute to astronautics through academic or professional activities, reach out to other young people and to their community to share knowledge and experience, and contribute to the work of IAF committees or volunteer in support of other Federation activities.

Makapela, who holds an LLD from the University of Pretoria specialising in space law, boasts a pretty impressive resumé; she currently serves as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research‘s (CSIR) project and contract manager for aerospace and composites. She also represents the council on government’s South African Council for Space Affairs.

Makapela is also a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and co-ordinates the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court competition for the African region.

Promoting space science among African youth is one Makapela’s passions, which is why she is co-chair of the Africa Leadership Youth Forum

Her previous job titles include project manager for the Department of Science and Technology’s National Earth Observations and Space Secretariat, deputy director of the Advanced Manufacturing unit within the Department of Trade and Industry.

The five other Young Space Leaders are Guillaume Girard (Spain), Ryan L Kobrick (US), Yu Xiaozhou (China), Christopher Vasko (Netherlands) and Liz Seward (UK).

The group will travel to Jerusalem at the 66th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in October this year.
