Tshwane University of Technology hosts its first hackathon

Geekulcha has held yet another one of their hackathons, this time one breaking new ground as it was the first event of this type ever held at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

TUT’s Soshanguve campus held the event this past weekend and more than a hundred entrants took part, tackling the fourteen challenges  of the competition over thirty-six hours.

Along with university students, fifteen high schoolers from Geekulcha’s VacWork programme punched above their weight and took part in the full competition.

“It is of a great belief that this hackathon will stimulate a greater Maker Culture on campus, leads to more Academic Excellence and prepare a better future of more Producers and better consumers”, says Tiyani Nghonyama, organiser of the event and most of Geekulcha’s hackathons.

The winners of the event were:

1. Smart Declaration by Code Gurus
A system to pair TUT students with their devices, hopefully reducing theft and being able to detect when a stolen device is trying to be declared.
2. Mentor Me by Nerd4Ctrl

Everyone needs a helping hand, especially at university. This challenge was focused on creating a system to connect mentors with students and to book sessions with them, as well as the ability for students to rate their mentors.

3. Exclusion Checker by Developers4Change

Allows students to check their exclusion status and their academic record.

The 2016 round of this event promises to be larger and if you’d like to participate in it or other hackathons, give Geekulcha a shout at dev@geekulcha.com.
