3D print your own Pip-Boy 3000 Mark IV from Fallout 4

When Bethesda announced that the Fallout 4 collector’s edition would come with a wearable, functional Pipboy, we were more than a bit excited.

But it seems we were never to cross paths with one for ourselves. Several online retailers put the item up on their stores and Animeworx told us their allocation was gobbled up in less than a day.

No problem though, we’ll just wait for the next wave to come around… or we would until Bethesda told us that they just can’t make any more.

Well then, we’ll just have to go hide in a vault for a couple hundred years to wait for the dissapointment to pass, or we could just make our own.

Although cosplayers and costume makers have been making the Pipboys in various designs over the years, tinkerer Yvo de Haas just blew most of them out of the water with his 3D printed version.

Like the official one, Haas’ invention fits a phone to be used as the screen and interface of the Pipboy, but he has improved on the design by adding an opening tape player that accepts dummy tapes. They don’t play any minigames yet though.

Other improvements include larger versions which Haas will release soon, these being better for those with bigger proportions or a bigger phone.

Now that you’ve seen it in action you can make your own. The page detailing the project includes the 3D files as well as a list of what you’ll need to make it. This definitely isn’t a simple phone stand or desktop toy, so if you’re thinking of tackling this you’ll need a bit of experience. Thankfully Hass says he will be expanding the page with a guide to help you along.

Since we’re such big fans of the series and will be Pipboy-less when November 10th rolls around,  we’re very tempted to try making one of these for ourselves. Don’t be surprised if we have a how to or a build log on it in the future.
