Almost 2 400 Telkom employees affected by retrenchments

Trade union Solidarity claims that 2 393 Telkom workers will be leaving the company as part of its voluntary retrenchment process.

The move comes as Telkom has been embarking on a massive restructuring process over the last couple of weeks, and even after the Labour Court ruled that Telkom’s retrenchment process be stopped, the fixed and mobile service provider seems to be forging ahead.

“Telkom has accepted a total of 2 393 employees’ applications for voluntary severance packages. Moreover, these employees’ services will officially end tomorrow (31 July),” Solidarity said in a statement.

The amount of workers departing the company represents around 13 per cent of its total workforce, as by the last count Telkom had around 18 000 staff.

“Given the volatile climate within Telkom, we anticipated that a significant amount of employees would prefer to leave the company. Nonetheless, we remain highly concerned about the exodus of skilled Telkom workers and how this will affect the company’s future endeavours and delivery of services,” commented Marius Croucamp, head of Solidarity’s Communications Industry.

Earlier this month Solidarity fought Telkom in court in order for it to stop its retrenchment process. The court ruled in favour of the union.

“This judgment is a victory for Telkom workers who are regularly being subjected to restructuring processes. Solidarity will do everything in its power to ensure that Telkom abide by the court order and follow the correct procedures,” said Solidarity Director General secretary Johan Kruger.

Telkom however, doesn’t seem concerned about the ruling.

“While the judgment is disappointing, this is a temporary delay in the restructuring of Telkom, which remains a key business requirement for the future sustainability of the organisation,” it said in a statement.
