Gears of War and Shadow Complex now playable on the Xbox One

When Microsoft announced during this year’s E3 conference that the Xbox One will be getting backwards compatibility with Xbox360 games, a lot of gamers thought that they will be able to play their entire collection immediately.

It turns out that only a small selection of Xbox 360 games (primarily Xbox Arcade games) was being made available initially, with more being added as time goes by.

Well, two more games have just been added to the list of backwards-compatible titles, as Microsoft’s Major Nelson announced that Gears of War and Shadow Complex are being added from today. Not for everyone, however: they will only work if you’re a member of the Xbox Preview Program.

If you own either or both of those games and are a member of the Preview Program, all you have to do is pop the game disk into your Xbox One; a small patch should start to download, after which you should be good to go.

If you only own them digitally, they will appear on the list of games that are ready to install.

The good news is if you’re not a Preview Program member, you’ll be able to join the party in two weeks’ time when the functionality rolls out to everyone.

Microsoft also revealed that if you buy the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Xbox One or the Xbox One Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Bundle, you will get all four Gears of War games for free.

“By playing Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live from Aug. 25 through Dec. 31, 2015, you’ll get access to Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment in Backward Compatibility when it launches this fall,” it said in a blog post.
