Sony’s next mid-range phone takes 13MP selfies

For those of you who take a lot of selfies, you’ve surely noticed that unless you’re using a high-end phone that the quality of those selfies leaves a lot to be desired.

Well Sony has also noticed that, and is working to rectify the problem with two mid-range phones that have really good front-facing cameras.

These new phones take the form of the Xperia M5 and C5; the C5 is the bigger of the two at six inches and has twin 13MP cameras while the five-inch M5 has a 13MP front-facing camera for selfies and a 21.5MP rear-facing one. The C5 is being touted as the better phone for selfies as it has what Sony calls a “Selfie Flash” on its front camera.

Only the M5 has been confirmed to be coming to South Africa by Sony’s local PR peeps, though, and that’s a good thing because it appears to be the better of the two, the absence of a front flash notwithstanding.

The M5 sports a five-inch Full HD screen that uses Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 technology, as well as a 2.0GHz 64-bit processor and 3GB of RAM that promise to keep Android 5.0 speeding along nicely. Quite possibly the best part about the design is the near borderless bezel that surrounds the screen, something I’ve always liked the idea of.

But it’s the M5’s camera and durability that get the most attention in Sony’s ads, as it has a fast autofocus and is water-resistant.

The M5 will apparently be available here in Q4 2015.

Will the prospect of a phone that takes better selfies encourage you to buy an M5? As always, let us know.
