Find out why ICFJ is investing R60m into data journalism in Africa

Here’s a thing: a few months ago Chris Roper, then editor-in-chief of the Mail & Guardian, dropped a bit of a bombshell by announcing that he was leaving his post to join the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) as a Senior Knight Fellow. Many – including myself – asked the question “why leave one of the most prestigious jobs in South African journalism for a little known NGO?”

The answer is slowing becoming clear, as ICFJ has got big plans for data journalism and Roper is currently the data editor for Code for Africa, an ICFJ initiative. The organisation recently announced a massive R60m cash pot with which it hopes to establish new “Citizen Labs” for data journalism and training existing journalists in the art of using data to discover and tell stories. Roper will play a significant role in helping to spend that money wisely and grow the discipline.

Which is why the Joburg chapter of Hacks/Hackers (of which I’m an organising member) has invited Roper to speak and explain all. If you’re a writer, coder, data scientist or just someone interested in how programmers and story tellers can come together for the greater good, you’ll want to catch this talk.

It’s happening next Tuesday 18th August at JoziHub in 44 Stanley (map and directions here) from 6pm. Entry is free, just signup at the Hacks/Hackers Meetup page.
