Over 55 000 people took Cell C’s buyout package

We’ve all seen the commercials from Cell C that offer to buyout customers on other networks if they switch over to South Africa’s third mobile network.

While Cell C has never confirmed how many people have actually taken up the offer, CEO Jose Dos Santos let slip today that it is around 55 000.

During Cell C’s launch of LTE coverage in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, Dos Santos initially said that the number was in the tens of thousands, but eventually revealed that the number of people who ditched their current network for Cell C’s R10 000 buyout offer is around 55 000.

Asked whether the R10 000 buyout offer was cutting into its bottom line, Dos Santos explained that it has actually pushed the network further.

“Cell C has reinvented itself. I can’t go into a financial update, but I can say that the company is now profitable, month on month. We have seen sustainable growth, and right now we have 22 million subscribers on the network,” he said.

He added Cell C’s different approach to business is making it attractive to other mobile operators. There have been rumours in the media for a number of months that Cell C might have a new parent company soon, but Dos Santos didn’t entertain questions on the matter.

“Network operators will not survive, and they have to think differently. Our business model isn’t like that of Vodacom and MTN, and that is how we have survived. Why do they want to buy us? Is it because we are useless? No, it is because we are good at what we do, and now that is going to come at a premium,” he said.
