Twitter may be expanding the character limit on tweets

If you’ve ever been in the middle of a Tweet and realised that 140 characters isn’t going to cut it, you’re in for some good news.

According to a report on Re/Code, Twitter is considering expanding the limit on Tweets. Citing “multiple people familiar with the company’s plans” the article states that Twitter is building a “new product” to enable users to publish long-form content on its platform.

The sources didn’t reveal how this new product would work or what it would look like. They also didn’t reveal what the new character limit would be.

It’s likely, though, that the new product may work in a similar fashion to services like TwitLonger, which allows users to write lengthy posts, publish them and then ports the first 100 or so characters to Twitter along with a link back to the longer post. Or at least, we hope this is the case, since Tweets with unlimited character spaces may turn our Twitterfeeds into something that looks like someone uploaded the NSA’s database.

The Wall Street Journal claims that Twitter’s interim-CEO Jack Dorsey is firmly behind the idea, although the company is still grappling internally about what the new limit should be increased to.

The move, if true, would mark a massive change for Twitter as its 140 character limit on Tweets is one of the platform’s defining features. Then again, the social media and micro-blogging platform did drop the character limit on Direct Messages last month, so this change may not be beyond the realm of possibility.
