Peeple vanishes in the wake of online backlash

Well, that didn’t take long.

After five days of sustained online flaming, outrageous threat and general abuse, Peeple, the app that allows users to rate people they know (whether they like it or not) seems to have vanished from the internet.

Created by Nicole McCullough and Julia Cordray, Peeple was in development and planned for release in November. But now it’s become rather impossible to track down any trace of it… well, apart from the rather large collection of articles voicing concern about the app and its ramifications and the backlog of, shall we say, strongly worded tweets criticising both the app and its creators.

Top among the concerns voiced was the invasive nature of the app, the fact that there was no opt-out clause for people being rated and the legal concerns the app raised surrounding the capture of someone’s personal data without their consent. Both the app and its creators also became targets for a torrent of abuse on social media.

All of this online backlash seems to have had the desired effect. If you chuck ‘Peeple into a Google search right now and head to the app’s official website you’ll find a “Not Found” message. Ditto its Twitter account.

Furthermore all of the videos on Peeple’s YouTube channel about the making of the app have been pulled except one called “Peeple Watching Ep11 – Viral & Global in 24 Hours”. In it, Julia Cordray enthuses about making it to the front page of every tech media outlet in the world, although the reasons for this happening are kind of skirted over.

While Peeple’s social media and official site may have gone dark, the world may not have seen the last of the app. In a lengthy post on LinkedIn, Cordray wrote:

“We are in fact creating an app called Peeple and have every intention of releasing it at the end of November.”

So, the app that has been tagged ‘Yelp! for people’ may still be on the cards. Lord help us all…
