VoiceMap tour app ads more audio tours in Joburg and Cape Town

Cape Town based company, VoiceMap, with whom a former UCT student collaborated on a Thundafund campaign in the midst of the #RhodesMustFall protests in May, has launched several more walking tours in Cape Town and Joburg for residents and visitors to explore.

The VoiceMap app acts as a companion tour guide on your smartphone, providing an audio history of famous sites, as well as interesting tidbits and local tips as you walk or cycle by. It uses GPS technology to pick up your location and match it to the VoiceMap library of audio tours.

Conceptualised in CT

The app was conceptualised in Cape Town, with the company’s offices located in Woodstock, and has grown to host nearly 100 audio tours in 38 cities around the world.

In the Cape Town section of VoiceMap’s app, you’ll find 28 featured audio tours in and around the city, including Sea Point PromenadeWoodstock’s street artMuizenberg and more. Accessing some tours is free, while others will cost you from $0.99c (just under R13.10c) to around $3.99.

VoiceMap’s features include GPS autoplay (accurate to five meters), online and offline maps, accounts that sync across devices, and social media integration. Users are also welcome to become virtual guides and publish their own audio tours on the platform. Each publisher is paid 50% of the proceeds from their audio tour.

Diverse storytellers

“The free publishing tool attracts a diverse range of storytellers – among them, journalists, authors, broadcasters, street artists, and passionate locals – and we encourage them to share their personal perspectives on particular neighbourhoods over the course of a short walk, cycle or drive,” Claire van den Heever, who handles VoiceMap’s marketing and communications, told htxt.africa.

VoiceMap only features two tours in Joburg at the moment, but the company expects to see more South Africans with stories to tell creating their own audio tours in due course.

You can download the VoiceMap app free for Android or iOS.
