Facebook to replace “Other” inbox with Message Requests

If you read that headline and found yourself asking “What’s the ‘other’ inbox?”, you’re not alone. Turns out, it’s the least successful of Facebook’s features, and it’s now being retired and replaced by something called Message Requests.

You’ll find the “Other” inbox under your Messages, just to the right of Inbox. When they weren’t spam, messages that appeared in the “Other” inbox were almost always from people you’re not Facebook friends with, and so few people even checked it that Facebook has decided to retire it.

But Facebook still wants people you’re not friends with be able to to contact you, so they’ve replaced that “other” inbox with Message Requests, a feature that allows unsolicited messages to reach you, but only once.

Should you ignore or delete messages that arrive in this folder, that’s it – that person will not be able to contact you again. Reply, and the message will be transferred to your regular Faceboook Inbox and you and your new contact can talk further.

Facebook says this new approach to the “other” inbox is designed to allow people you don’t know to contact you, but to transfer all control over how far that interaction goes to you.

“We’ve heard so many stories like estranged parents trying to get back in touch, or you lost your wallet and someone trying to get in touch with you” Messenger’s Product Manager on Message Requests Tony Leach explained to TechCrunch. “That’s why we want to replace that with a system that makes it a lot easier to catch the messages that you want to see.”

The feature is said to be rolling out in the US at the moment, and will reach other territories soon. When I checked my own Facebook account, my Messages folder still contained an “other” inbox, which suggests that the Message Requests update has not yet rolled out to all accounts and regions.
