Ahmed, The Clock Kid, seeks R211 million in damages

Back in September Ahmed Mohamed was falsely accused of bringing a homemade hoax bomb to MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas. Mohamed was released and no charges were brought against him.

Now, Mohamed and his attorneys are seeking $15 million (R211 million) in damages from both the Irving Independent School District (ISD) and the City of Irving.

A letter sent to Irving ISD from Kelly D. Hollingsworth representing Laney & Bollinger Lawyers who are representing Mohamed says:

Ahmed’s rights were clearly violated. He was detained and interrogated by high-ranking employees of Irving ISD and the Irving Police Department pressured to falsely confess to a crime he did not commit, and then interrogated again by the Irving Police Department at the juvenile detention center, all without his parents being notified or present.

The attorneys go on to say that Mohamed was “publicly mistreated” and that he has suffered “severe psychological trauma” because of the incident. Among the incidents that resulted because of his arrest, Mohamed had his face super imposed on a famous image of Osama bin Laden on a blog post and was subjected to hate speech by some members of the public.

The result is a demand for reparations of $10 million from the City of Irving and $5 million from Irving ISD.

The legal team have also demanded written apologies from both Irving Mayor, Beth Van Duyne and Irving Police Chief, Larry Boyd acknowledging that Mohamed never intended to threaten anybody.

After the incident Mohamed met with US President Barack Obama and Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Since then Mohamed and his family have moved to Qatar where he is attending the Foundation for Education, Science and Community where he has a scholarship.
