If you want a software pirate to be fined R2.8 million, don’t watch this video

A software pirate simply known as Jakub F. unfortunately (for him) became the first person to be convicted in the Czech Republic for online piracy, according to the Prague Daily Monitor.

Unable to pay the full $223 709 fine imposed for his crime, he was given a three-year suspended sentence and managed to reach an out-of-court settlement with the Business Software Alliance, who represented the company whose products Jakub F pirated in the country.

Part of the settlement agreement was that he pays a small fine and makes a video about his crime. Those conditions however, did come with a restriction in that his ‘The Story of My Piracy’ video has to receive 200 000 views – or he has to repay the entire $223 709 fine.

The description of the video translates to “The real story of ones and zeroes, which can also be yours.”

Unfortunately, the video doesn’t have any closed captioning, meaning that there are no English subtitles. But, ironically translated by TorrentFreak the pirate states “I thought that I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I thought that it didn’t hurt the big companies. I didn’t even do it for the money, I did it for fun. I felt in the warez community that I meant something. I was convinced that I was too small a fish for someone to get to me. But eventually, they got me. Even for me, the investigators came to work.”

The two-minute video at the time of writing had just over 55 000 views to go to hit the 200 000 target.

The video is below, and also on a dedicated website set up for the cause.
