Star Wars: The Force Awakens rakes in almost R5 million in its South African opening day

December 16th may have been the Day of Reconciliation, but many people celebrated it as Star Wars Day as the highly awaited  Episode VII – The Force Awakens was released.

The movie broke the record for the biggest opening Wednesday in South African Box Office history by grossing R4 726 865. The previous record holder was Iron Man 3 back in 2013.

As the film has only been out for little more than a day, Star Wars may break more records for opening weekend by the time Monday rolls around. We’ll update you when we have those numbers.

This isn’t the first time this very film has broken a South African record; on the first day ticket sales opened, the film sold 2 299 tickets. This beat out Fifty Shades of Grey with  1 489 when it opened in February.

To be honest, we’re not at all surprised by this: Star Wars is a real juggernaut of a franchise and we love it. If you want a spoiler-free review you can read it here.
