The Xiaomi Mi 5 is made of ceramic and has a fingerprint scanner

Goodness gracious there have been some really great smartphones coming out of MWC 2016, and Xiaomi just gave us another to add to our collective wish list: the modestly named Mi 5.

The Mi 5 is the follow up to Mi 4 which blew us away with its great battery life and small price. For the Mi 5, you’re looking at significant performance boost: it comes equipped with Qualcomm’s currest fastest Snapdragon 820 chipset, which will run at 2.15GHz on the 64GB and 128GB iterations and a lower 1.8GHz on the 32GB version.

Unlike its predecessor the Mi 4 will not be made available in a 16GB variant.

Staying on the inside, the Mi 5 boasts 4GB of RAM and the 128GB model is fitted with a 3 000mAh battery, hopefully that means we get similar battery life to the Mi 4 which lasted 6 hours in our battery abuse test.

Camera duties are handled by a 16MP rear camera which uses a Sony IMX298 sensor with optical image stabilisation and can record video at 4K. The front camera is a much smaller 4MP snapper.

Of course, this being a Xiaomi the Mi 5 will use the MIUI 7 interface which is the firm’s own version of Android that gets updated weekly with the help of the Xiaomi community.

The handset will also be the first to include Mi Video Calling, a cross-platform app that lets you video chat with your contacts. The app has live video effects that can be added to the call as well as multi-tasking modes.

The 128GB will have a ceramic body which is reportedly harder to crack while the 32GB and 64GB variants will have a curved glass body. Both versions will also house a fingerprint scanner in the home button.

The Mi 5 will be available in China on 1st March with sales expected to spread to India soon after that. Pricing is pegged at $262 (R4 020) for the 32GB version and $354 (R5 432) for the larger 128GB version.

Unfortunately there is no news on South African pricing or availability just yet but as soon as we known, we’ll let you know.

Now, if you’ll excuse us we need to figure out which of the phones we’ve heard about so far we’re going to be getting for ourselves this year.
