Hearthstone’s Whispers of the Old Gods: Everything we know so far

Blizzard confirmed on Friday that it would introduce the Old Gods of Warcraft lore to its latest expansion for collector card game, Hearthstone.

The Whispers of the Old Gods will summon all the creepy crawlies and spine tingling creatures that lurk beneath the surface of the Warcraft world and is expected to surface in late April or early May.

The expansion will introduce 134 cards with which players can reap destruction, and Ben Brode gave us a sneak peak at some of the cards during the live stream on Friday night.

Old Gods

At first glance C’Thun seems like a silly card. A 10 mana cost for a 6/6 card with a random Battlecry, just sounds like a bad idea in any language.

However, once its been buffed up by Twilight Elder and Beckoner of Evil (which are decent cards in their own right) you could buff C’Thun up to a point where the card’s Battlecry could become a substantial board clearer.

It’s important to note that both of Beckoner and Twilight Elder will buff C’Thun no matter where the card is, be that in your deck, your hand or the card graveyard. We foresee a substantial increase in the amount of Resurrect decks being built.

Blizzard said that players will receive C’Thun as well as Beckoner of Evil cards when they open their first Whispers of the Old Gods pack.

REMIX!

Friday night also saw the reveal of three cards which might sound familiar to regular players though, the release of the Old Gods seem to have warped them, a lot.

The Corrupted Healbot (Blizzard’s remix of Antique Healbot, a play on “anti-kill bot”) seems rather confusing as most (if not all) the Mech cards come from the Goblins Vs Gnomes expansion which we know will not be used in Standard mode. That said when pairing with Auchenai Soulpriest this card could just turn the game in your favour.

Polluted Hoarder is a fairly basic Deathrattle card based on Loot Hoarder, and Validated Doomsayer has been given, “I told you so” rights as well as +7 to attack at the start of your turn.

The Outliers

While Blizzard only released these six cards on Friday, three more have made their way on to the internet.

The first, a neutral legendary card was spotted by PC Games N and is named Hogger, Doom of Elwynn. For seven mana players get a 6/6 card which summons a 2/2 Gnoll with Taunt whenever it takes damage.

The second is what appears to be a Paladin card which reminds us a lot of Muster for Battle. For five mana Stand Against Darkness will summon five 1/1 Silver Hand Recruits which is decent. Pair this with Quartermaster (in Wild mode) and you have a something your opponent needs to address immediately.

The final card we’ve spotted has us jumping for glee. Eater of Secrets is a four mana card with 2/4 stats with a Battlecry which reads: “Destroy all enemy Secrets. Gain +1/+1 for each.”

Goodbye Secret Paladin and Mage, we would say we’re going to miss you but we’re more than happy to see you both gone.

Of course, these cards don’t come for free and if like me you aren’t content with grinding your life away you can pre-order 50 packs for €50 (R853.28) which will also give you a wicked new card back.

We’ll be keeping a keen eye on the Blizzard camp in the coming months as more details around the expansion are revealed so be sure to check back with htxt.africa to get your Hearthstone fix.
