SA’s Crash Detech in final of R15.5m startup compo

Chivas Regal has revealed the other 26 startup entrepreneurs competing against Jaco Gerrits, winner of the South African leg of The Venture competition, for the international crown and R4.8 million grand prize.

Gerrits was announced as the The Venture South Africa winner in January, beating out four other finalists in the regional leg.

Gerrits is the creator of Crash Detech, an app that can detect if someone is in a car accident and automatically dispatch emergency services to them.

He joined regional winners from all over the world in London to take part in an accelerator week programme created by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, where winners will meet successful social entrepreneurs who will provide lessons on various topics.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the 27 finalists of The Venture to Oxford, where we hope to provide them with both an unforgettable learning experience, and an invaluable platform on which to build their businesses,” Daniela Papi-Thornton, Deputy Director of the Skoll Centre, said in a statement.

“We will be offering workshops on a range of topics, from understanding how to measure social impact to methods and best practices for scaling, taught by some of the best minds in social impact education. We are impressed with the diversity of the finalist pool, and are excited to find out more about their businesses,” she added.

Below is the list of finalists, along with a brief description of their businesses.
