Get out of a jam with updated Google Maps

Anybody who lives in a South African city and needs to commute in peak traffic, will know the frustration of sitting in jam-packed traffic from light to light.

Google is at least trying to help you with that, and wants you to avoid traffic altogether if it can. Google Maps has been updated so that it will now show users where the bottlenecks are on a journey they’ve entered into the app.

Traffic alerts aren’t entirely new functionality, but the Google announced recently that it has been updated to give better guidance on certain traffic alerts.

“Now when you input your destination, you’ll get a spoken alert for upcoming traffic conditions that helps you identify the quickest route,” Google said in a statement.

The functionality is very similar to that of Waze, which is owned by Google, so it is actually no surprise that Google Maps has incorporated the functionality. We won’t be surprised if it’s Waze’s API thrown directly into Google Maps.

“While you’re on the road, Google Maps will give you a heads up if congestion lies ahead, and how long you’ll be stuck in a jam. You’ll also get the option to take alternate routes, including explanations for why one is recommended—whether it’s the fastest or just avoids traffic,” it said.
