Online petition calls for Zuma to resign

President Jacob Zuma has come under a lot of fire recently for his handling of the Nkandla report, in which the Constitutional Court found that he did not uphold the Constitution of the country by unduly benefiting from security upgrades.

Many corners of society have called for him to resign from his post, and now an online petition by Avaaz is trying to gather support for that exact cause.

“Zuma failed to uphold the constitution, the sacred charter of what our country means. This transcends party politics. It’s about standing up for South Africa itself and defending the country we dream we can be,” the petition reads.

The petition calls on Zuma “to set an honourable precedent”, and explains that it is time to “empower the anti-corruption system to serve the public good. It’s time for a new, clean South Africa to rise.”

To gather more votes for the petition, it states that Zuma acted above the law, above the country, and above his party, and details how a lot of former ANC leaders have in the last couple of weeks also called for Zuma to step down.

“And for the first time senior respected ANC figures like Ahmed Kathrada and church and former trade union leaders are pushing for the President to be recalled. Let’s stand behind them and call for Zuma to go, to show that no man, however powerful, is bigger than the idea of South Africa itself. Sign to add your voice and then share with everyone!”

Currently there is no way in telling how many people have signed the petition, as Avaaz doesn’t disclose those numbers. However at the time of writing, over 2 000 people shared it on Facebook, over 1 600 shared the link over email, and over 400 people had tweeted about it according to the social media stats displayed at the bottom of the petition page.
