R2K to protest against abuse of the state’s surveillance capacity

Activist group Right2Know Campaign (R2K), which has been fighting against government surveillance, online censorship and cyber security in South Africa, is once again taken its concerns to government.

The group is planning to hold pickets in Johannesburg and Cape Town to highlight the government’s surveillance capacity, this week.

“These actions form part of an ongoing campaign to highlight our concerns about abuse of the state’s surveillance capacity, and demand for urgent reform to the surveillance law, RICA,” it said in a statement.

It will be staging a protest in Cape Town today against surveillance following the State Security Agency’s budget vote, at the Gates of Parliament on Plein Street at 2pm.

The second demonstration will take place tomorrow on Freedom Day in Johannesburg, protesting at the State Security Agency’s offices in Sandton to demand an end to mass surveillance and urgent reforms to RICA.

That will take place at the Office of Interception Centres (OIC), 25 Tambach Road in Sunninghill, at 11am.

The picket actions are part of R2K’s broader programme of activities host by R2K and allied organisations in connection with ‘Freedom Week’, with events scheduled to take place on 27 April, 1 May (May Day) and 3 May (World Press Freedom Day).

“Together we can defend the political space we all need to advance our struggles for social, economic, and environmental justice in the context of growing social instability and repression. We’re calling on you and your organisations to plan actions highlighting freedom of assembly and association, the free flow of information, and the freedom of expression,” explained R2K.
