Star Wars holographic chess game to become a reality

Any Star Wars fan who vaguely paid attention during many of the bar scenes, will remember the amusing moment two patrons were playing a holographic version of a game similar to Battle Chess.

The board game was designed for the Star Wars franchise by movie artist Phil Tippett, and he has now turned to Kickstarter to make the game an actual reality. It is also not really surprising that it has come to the media’s attention today, as it is May 4th after all.

Officially called HoloGrid: Monster Battle, the Augmented Reality campaign is seeking $100 000 for development. To bring the game to life, Tippett will be working with HappyGiant, a game development studio who has worked on projects for LucasArts and Industrial Light & Magic in the past.

“This is our first step into a new world of AR gaming, and while we are launching it on mobile initially so everyone can play it, our long term vision is to bring it to emerging AR and VR platforms,” said HappyGiant president Mike Levine.

Tippet also explained that the monsters in HoloGrid will be created using the same technique as for the ones in the Star Wars, which was through photogrammetry. Models of all the characters are made, scanned, and then digitally added to the game.

At the time of writing, it had 44 backers raising a total of $8 200, with 34 days to go.
