Netflix’s geo-blocking crackdown knocks out Borderless Internet

Geo-blocker Borderless Internet appears to have been targeted by Netflix in its efforts to block subscribers from accessing content not available in their regions.

Borderless Internet confirmed that its services have been knocked out on Twitter – and it is struggling to get it back up.

“Quick update to let everyone know that Netflix has pushed out a new anti geo-relocation system today. All of our regions will currently present a proxy error with Netflix,” Borderless Internet said in a statement.

The company said that as soon as it creates a new proxy system, it’s detected by Netflix’s servers and content is blocked, leaving users with an error message.

“Every new system we spin up for Netflix is detected within minutes. We think we know how they are doing it, but it will take a little while (24-48 hours) for us to get a working solution in place. In the meantime, we are down across the board for any geo-relocation on Netflix.”

Netflix launched across the globe in January, and announced plans to crackdown on subscribers using VPNs to access content not available in their regions round about the same time.

This naturally has put a lot of noses out of joint; a lot of regions don’t have access to the gargantuan amount of content US subscribers enjoy, although they’re still expected to pay roughly the same price.
