Parliament: Uber vs metered cab conflict must be resolved

Conflicts between Uber and metered taxi drivers need to be resolved before lives are lost in urban centres where the cab-hailing app operates.

This is the word from the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport, which has weighed in on the ongoing violent incidents and disruptions between metered taxi drivers against Uber drivers operating around the country.

Chairperson of the committee, Dikeledi Magadzi said the safety of passengers is of utmost importance.

Last month shots rang out near the Sandton Gautrain station when police tried to control a situation where metered taxi drivers had suddenly attacked Uber drivers ferrying passengers in and out of the busy area.

Incidents of intimidation have also recently been reported in Durban and Cape Town.

“Any efforts geared towards improving transportation of people are a most welcome relief, especially if that comes at an affordable price and efficient service. These continued conflicts with Uber drivers should be attended to as a matter of urgency,” Magadzi said.

“The committee will not get involved on matters concerning private operations. Legislation has been put in place in-order to deal with situations that have criminal elements,” she added.

Magadzi urged all stakeholders to practise restraint and apply good business practices and said law enforcement authorities should enforce the law consistently, without preference.

“The transport sector should be the safest and should be geared towards ensuring that more jobs are created and that the movement of people is seamless,” she said.
