Is this the best drone footage collection ever?

We’re huge fans of creative types who use drones to capture beautiful footage, but this montage released by the New York City Drone Film Festival (NYCDFF) is breathtaking.

Set to the music of Talisco’s Sorrow, the clip features imagery from all of the participants of the festival, offering a vast array of visual subjects including building demolition, volcanos and even light-suit wearing skiers in the dead of night.

According the Festival’s official website, the #NYCDFF is first event of its kind, “exclusively dedicated to celebrating the art of drone cinematography.”

“The festival offers an international platform for filmmakers from every corner of the globe to exhibit their work in front of industry professionals and the drone community.”

With Adobe and drone maker DJI as sponsors, this year’s 3-day festival received 350 film submissions from 45 countries, saw more than 5 000 people in attendance over the festival weekend and earned over 350 million media impressions worldwide.

You can head on over to the NYCDFF website to see all the winners in their respective categories, but enough of us flapping our jaw about the festival itself. Have a look at the video below and marvel in the phenomenon that is drone footage at its best.

Well, at least for this year.

In case you were wondering, the company that did the filming on the set of Game of Thrones is Skynamic, and you can see its showreel for the festival below. You will see a lot of familiar faces, as the company is pushing the boundaries as to what drones can do.

Capturing footage on drones are a lot cheaper than traditional methods like using helicopters, and as with the video above, the shots of actor Patrick Dempsey running at full tilt through what seems like a Redwood forest wouldn’t have been possible (without using a greenscreen) if it weren’t for drones.
