Fitbit’s new feature will put you to sleep, in a good way

Fitbit is rolling out the Sleep Schedule feature on its app today that will allow users to monitor their sleeping patterns.

While it may seem strange that Fitbit is trying to get people to rest more, there is a reason for it.

According to research, a good night’s rest results in a better exercise routine the next day.

In fact, Micheal Grandner, Director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona, likens bad sleeping patterns to bad travel patterns.

“If you’re constantly changing your sleep routine, it can have the same effect as giving yourself jetlag,” said Grandner. “You are continually changing your circadian rhythm, also known as your internal clock, which can negatively impact your health and wellness.”

The director explains that those looking to improve physical performance should aim for consistent bed and waking times.

Which is where Fitbit’s new feature comes in.

Users can now set Sleep Goals which Fitbit will use to determine the best bedtime and wake up targets.

As the wearable learns when you sleep and when you wake up, it will adjust your schedule accordingly.

In all honesty though, you could just do that yourself by monitoring the data provided in the Sleep Schedule History Chart.

Now for the bad news, the feature only works with Fitbit’s that automatically track sleep. For brevity sake that’s the Surge, Blaze, Charge HR, Alta, Charge and Flex wearables.

Fitbit One users can enable the feature through manual sleep tracking.

So, if you want to start tracking your sleep patterns make sure your Fitbit app up to date and get to bed.
