Watch: Gauteng introduces first-in-SA eChalkboard for schools

The Gauteng Department of Education has revealed a brand new addition to its ICT rollout plan for Gauteng schools: eChalkboards.

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, today announced eChalkboards, a first in South Africa which will see teachers’ notes being automatically saved on an internal hard drive as they write so that pupils can send the board notes to their smartphones or laptop.

eChalkBoards look like ordinary white boards, but have what the department calls revolutionary tech built into them.

Pupils can take the notes from the eChalkboard using the built-in QR code scanner, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port and screenshot capability.

The eChalkboard will also help teachers who are new to or struggling to use the SmartBoards, as they can write on it and have their notes transferred to the SmartBoards.

“This will help eliminate time-wasting in the classroom as learners can just refer back to the notes taken from the eChalkboard, instead of having to ask the teacher to repeat what they’d missed. It will also help learners who are absent from lessons,” Lesufi said.

Like with the tablets and SmartBoards, eChalkboards will first be introduced in Grades 11 and 12 in the province.
