Twitter’s longer tweets are coming on Monday

Twitter has on many occasions stressed that it won’t increase the character limit for tweets, which is currently locked-in to 140.

But it did offer a glimmer of hope in May when it announced that things like usernames, links and attachments won’t count towards that.

Well, it has been three months down the line, and it finally seems like the company will be making good on that promise.

While it is yet to officially confirm when the longer tweet change will kick in, The Verge has learnt that it will be on Monday 19th September this year.

At the time when the original announcement was made, CEO Jack Dorsey explained the reasoning behind it.

“This is the most notable change we’ve made in recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people the full expressiveness of the 140 characters. I’m excited to see even more dialog because of this,” he said.

With the number of changes happening, nobody is really sure if it will be done in one go, or if the new settings will be rolled out in phases.

According to The Verge, “it’s unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages. But the company will at least kick off the move next Monday.”

It is also unclear if tweeting services like Tweetdeck will be implementing, or at least accommodating, the incoming changes right off the bat.

As it is now, links can take up to 23 characters even after it has automatically been shortened by Twitter, so it is a fair chunk of change that you lose out on. But if that goes away, you will have more space to express your clever ideas and thoughts to the world.

Either way, we are pretty chuffed that the change will finally kick in.
