#Hlaudi: I did not hijack Mandoza’s funeral

Hlaudi Motsoeneng has defended his speech and hijacking of the funeral of Kwaito star, Mandoza, last Friday, during which he mostly spoke about the SABC and himself.

Motsoeneng was among the speakers at the funeral, held in Soweto and instead of speaking about the late artist, used the majority of his time to lash out at his detractors, promote 90% local music and told South Africans to pay their TV licences.

“People were saying ‘ey, Hlaudi is arrogant, when he was talking at Mandoza funeral, he was saying people should pay TV licence’. Maybe you need to understand why I was saying that [sic],” Motsoeneng said today at a media briefing where his new post at the SABC was announced.

“I was saying that people should pay TV licence and it was relevant at that time because if you pay TV licences, we will be able to pay royalties for those artists…Hlaudi did not hijack the funeral, Hlaudi was dealing with the issues that are relevant to the artists and any leader, he will deal with those issues in a funeral. I wasn’t hijacking anything [sic],” he added.
