Affordable robotics competition – AfrikaBot – finals are this month

Last year we brought you the story of AfrikaBot, a joint venture by the University of Johannesburg (UJ)  and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) which aimed to be “the world’s most affordable robotics competition”. The final contest of this endeavour is slated for this month.

This contests tasks participants – from townships, schools and universities – with creating a cheap robot that can navigate through a maze autonomously.

What sets this apart from many similar robotics competitions is the cost of the robots. As is inferred by the header image of this story – which is made up of pieces of LEGO, peanut butter lid tins, a shoe polish tin and other bits and bobs – AfrikaBot is contest for more ‘affordable’ robots.

The finals of the contest will take place at Zwartkops Raceway during the Shell Eco-Marathon. We highly suggest you check this one out, as you’ll get two events for the price of one. Well, that’s not really the truth, as both the Eco-Marathon and the AfrikaBot event are free to attend for everyone, you just need to get there.
