MTN and Cell C give students free data too

Earlier today, Telkom offered universities the opportunity to zero-rate access their websites so students could carry on their classes during the #FeesMustFall protests without zeroing out their data.

Now, MTN and Cell C seem to have followed suit. The mobile networks have decided to zero-rate access to university online content, enabling students to access their curriculum without incurring any data costs.

As is the case with Telkom’s offer, universities have to opt in to this offer by providing the mobile network with their URL address. At the time of this writing, students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and University of Pretoria will benefit from this initiative on MTN’s network.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, MTN took the decision to provide free access to online educational content in order to complement existing classroom training, leverage the benefits of online training and assist the students and academic institutions to salvage the 2016 academic year,” says Mteto Nyati, Chief Executive Officer: MTN South Africa.

“As MTN, we are mindful of the backlog that students and academic institutions are facing, and we believe that this gesture will help to maintain continuity and expedite access to much-needed educational content.”

Cell C, for its part, is apparently contacting universities and is offering to implement a reverse bill on their website URLs. The mobile network is encouraging students to check on its website to see if their university is participating in this initiative.

“We know students are facing a tough time at the moment, and many need to gain access to course material through their university’s online portal in order to complete their academic year. Zero-rating access is our way of assisting students,” said Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos.

So…, over to you Vodacom.
