The Moto Z and Moto Mods arrive in SA 1st November

After many years the Moto brand returns to South Africa with the arrival of the Moto Z smartphone -and Moto Mods – in November.

The Moto Z is an interesting take on a modular smartphone. The Moto Mods which are purchased separately from the phone add a number of cool features to the smartphone.

The Mods coming to South Africa include; the Moto Insta-Share Projector Mod (a 480p DLP projector capable of  projecting a 70inch display), the Incipio offGrid Power Pack Mod (an 2 200mAh battery add-on), the JBL SoundBoost Mod (houses two 3W speakers) and the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod (a camera mod with 10x optical zoom and a 12MP sensor).

All of the Mod’s – with the exception of the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod – have a dedicated battery rather than using the Moto Z’s battery.

Thin and powerful

The phone itself is incredibly small with a 5.2mm thickness (without Mods) but don’t let the size fool you, the Moto Z looks like it could throw a punch or two.

Inside the handset uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor which is paired with a quad-core CPU with two cores running at a peak of 2.15GHz and the other two cores at 1.6GHz.

The CPU has 4GB of RAM to draw on and users can choose between a 32GB or 64GB Moto Z. Should that not be enough for you the Moto Z supports microSD cards up to 1TB in capacity, though we can’t seem to find a card that size locally.

The battery has a rather small capacity of 2 600mAh but we suspect that Lenovo has done some clever engineering to get the phone to last the 30 hours it claims it will.

The most important question however is how much this handset will cost.

Lenovo has said that the Moto Z’s price will start at R12 999. The Mods start at R1 199 for the offGrid Power Pack Mod. We’ve included the pricing of the Mods below but keep in mind that these prices are simply a guideline, they may be more expensive following the launch.

Moto Insta-Share Projector Mod R 4,699
Incipio offGrid Power Pack Mod R 1,199
JBL SoundBoost Mod R1,699
Hasselblad True Zoom Mod R 4,299

The handset will be available from 1st November through Takealot and Cellucity and from Dion Wired from 13th November. There is now news on whether the handset will be available in contract packages from network operators just yet.
