The Synth Bike is a two-wheeled musical instrument

“Have you ever ridden your bike to the shops and thought ‘I could really do with making a song right now’? Well now you can” thanks to Synth Bike.

Those are some sage words from musician from the band ZIBRA and maker Sam Battle who has taken a 1973 Raleigh Bicycles chopper and outfitted it with a host of electronics to make music on the go.

At the back of the bicycle you’ll find a speaker, the middle of the frame has a small keyboard, and the front is outfitted with a synth and electronic drum kit.

Somewhere in the mess of wires are eight Arduino Nanos. We’re not sure why so many are needed, but we won’t question the decision to include them.

The tempo of the music is controlled by how fast the front wheel moves, so you need to really put in some effort if you want high-energy music.

Apparently all those electronics suck up a lot of energy and the on-board batteries can only keep the party going for 10 minutes at a time.

Instead of strapping more cells to it, we highly suggest that Battle fits a dynamo that can convert peddle power to a battery charge.

If you were wondering why this Synth Bike is labelled “2.0”, it’s because Battle tried out a similar concept back in September. This version used a BMX bike and a credit card that sequenced drums.
