SnapScan QR codes now work with Mastercard’s Masterpass too

Digital wallet service Masterpass has entered into a collaboration with SnapScan, allowing it to be a method of payment at more than 30 000 South African retailers.

This was announced today at the Mastercard Digital Indaba in Cape Town. This isn’t too much of a surprise when you remember that Standard Bank is the company behind SnapScan, and they worked with Mastercard to launch Masterpass in South Africa back in 2014.

The process of using the app at a SnapScan point of service is detailed below:

Consumers can download the MasterPass app from their app store, register, and load their credit, debit or cheque cards from any bank into the digital wallet. To pay, Masterpass users simply need to scan a QR code, or SnapCode, displayed at point of sale or online at a wide range of SnapScan merchants including coffee shops, professionals like doctors and market vendors. They then enter the payment amount into their Masterpass app and confirm the transaction with their ATM pin code or a one-time pin code sent to their mobile phones.

SnapScan really has become a regular site in South Africa since its launch back in 2013. Hell, we once saw a man selling hotdogs out of the back of his bakkie at a festival, and he accepted payments through the service. Masterpass can now enjoy this same widespread adoption without redoing all the work SnapScan had to do, very shrewd.

And the timing in impeccable too. Black Friday is tomorrow and South Africa has quickly adopted the US event as a frenzy of shopping. We’re sure many shoppers will be using this service in the very near future.
