Government sets aside R30m in funding for disabled entrepreneurs

Here’s a bit of good news for a Friday: the minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu is launching a funding scheme that hopes to support entrepreneurs with physical disabilities.

The fund has been dubbed the Amavulandlela Fund (which roughly translates to mean ‘the path openers’ in isiXhosa and isiZulu) and will be managed by the Small Enterprise Funding Agency. The aim of the fund is to give people with disabilities access to business opportunities so they can actively participate in the economy.

“As a caring government, we envisage a society where people with disabilities, like all South Africans, are accorded their full political, human, social and economic rights,” said Zulu in a statement.

The fund will be launched in Welkom in the Free State today and will consist of a R24 million loan component and a R6 million business support grant component. As you may have rightly guessed, the fund is only open to entrepreneurs with physical disabilities and companies where disabled persons have at least 26% ownership.

“People with disabilities can and should be active players in the mainstream economy. All barriers must be removed to enable them to access all available opportunities. We are determined to strengthen our support for small businesses that are owned and managed by people with disabilities,” concluded Zulu.
