Holiday Gift Guide 2016 – Media Madness

For a bit of variety, we’ve put together a selection of awesome gifts for the media lovers out there. Who wouldn’t want to see a huge 55-inch TV under the tree?

If you’re fast enough, you might even find these items online at prices cheaper than the prices listed here…

WD MyPassport Ultra 4TB USB 3.0 Portable HDD

There is a drawback to being connected to the internet all the time, and that is the huge amount of data that we accumulate. From downloading our favourite TV shows to accumulating massive quantities of home videos and photos, we need to store it all somewhere.

This Christmas, we can’t think of anything better for storing your cherished memories (and TV series) than on a WD My Passport Ultra portable hard drive with a good amount of storage space.

For some extra security, it comes with optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption, so you know that your private things will be kept exactly that – private.

And as it uses the super-fast USB 3.0 interface and copying stuff to and from it is really quick, why not go all the way and go with the massive 4TB version?

Samsung SUHD 55-INCH TV (55KS8500)

If you truly want to impress somebody this festive season or you just have left over tender money that you need to blow, there are no better televisions to do the job than the curved displays from Samsung from its latest Ultra High Definition range.

We know that Quantum Dot Display and High Dynamic Range technology won’t necessarily mean much to you yet, but know this: with those refinements to Samsung’s TV tech, you will experience billions of intense colours, and see incredible detail in both bright and dark scenes.

The 3 840 x 2 160 screen resolution is powered by Samsung’s SUHD Remastering Engine, making things just that much sharper and smoother. And then there is of course the curve, bringing the viewing experience closer to you no matter what angle you view it from.

As far as television sets go, Samsung’s SUHD range is right on the cutting edge, and well worth your Christmas cash.

Apple TV 64GB

Contrary to what the name implies, Apple TV isn’t actually a television set, but rather a little box that makes watching television just that much simpler.

While most new televisions now come with apps already installed and a degree of smarts, Apple TV brings those functions to older sets by giving you the ability to stream video to your five-year-old TV. It simply plugs into your television over HDMI and comes with apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBO and the like, but it also offers local storage for media files.

It’s essentially an all-in-one media player that lets you stream video from various internet sources as well as audio and video files stored on its hard drive, and is a great gift for Apple enthusiasts who love everything Apple, and want to extend it to their television sets as well.

LG 55-inch 4K Super Ultra HD TV (55UF950T)

Is there any better way to watch television than on this monster screen? We didn’t think so and with 139cm of viewing real estate, we don’t think that you are going to miss anything either.

The television makes use of LG’s Nano Spectrum Technology, which simply means that you will be able to see colours a lot better than you would on other televisions. The Ultra HD in the name also refers to 4K viewing, making everything on display just that much crisper. And if you don’t have access to 4K content quite yet, fear not, because this TV also upscales regular HD content to 4K.

You need good sound to go along with striking visuals, and that is where the screen’s Harman/Kardon sound systems comes in: it delivers big sound to complement the TV’s fantastic visual quality!

But perhaps most important is the fact that you’ll likely get as much enjoyment from this TV as the person for whom you’re buying it. That’s what we call a win-win.

Samsung Gear VR

Virtual Reality (VR) is all the rage these days, so why not give that special person in your life the ability to see other worlds in a completely new way this Christmas?

Samsung’s Gear VR is one of the easiest to use and cheapest VR devices these days. It works by simply slotting a Samsung Galaxy S6 or newer into the slot, and loading up one of the many VR apps available from Samsung’s marketplace or Google Play. It is really that simple!

Other VR devices can sell for well into the thousands of rands and require high-end computers to make them work, and while this isn’t exactly VR on the same scale, S6/S7 owners will still be able to enjoy some of the best content out there with the Gear VR.

And trust us – once you’ve experienced VR done properly, you won’t want to settle for anything else!

GoPro Hero5 Black Full HD Action Camera

Even though phones today can take some really amazing photos and capture video in high definition, they’re not suited to all conditions. That is exactly where a good action camera comes in, and where that is concerned, there is none better than GoPro’s Hero range.

The company’s latest model is one of the best it has ever produced, with a slimmer frame, better battery life and easy-to-use controls. But at the business end, you will be able to capture all your adventuring in 4K at 30 frames/s, 2.7K at 60 frames/s or 1080p at 120 frames/s. If you prefer to take pictures along the way, you can do so in 12 megapixel bursts.

The Ultra Wide Angle Glass Lens will also make sure that nothing escapes its view, and with the camera being waterproof up to 33 feet, there is also no need to buy the bulky waterproof case like you had to do with the older models.
